PESHAWAR: Islamic and other non-governmental organisations are engaged in a fierce but largely healthy competition while trying to provide relief to the earthquake victims in the NWFP and Azad Kashmir.

In the process, all the organisations are supplementing the efforts by the federal and provincial governments and the international community to cope with the tragedy. During a visit to Balakot, one saw and was told about existence of camps by around 20 organizations to perform different functions for the relief of the quake victims. The majority, a dozen to be precise, were Islamic. The remaining included the Edhi Foundation, once more conspicuous on account of its distinctive ambulance service, and the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP), which was assigned by the government to perform the lead role in distributing relief goods through its partner community organisations in the villages and the newly elected Nazims and councillors.

Altaf Hussain’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement too had displayed a banner in the destroyed Balakot bazaar but one didn’t observe any relief work by its volunteers. The Islamic organisations that had set up camps in Balakot were the Jama’at-i-Islami-run Al-Khidmat and its students wing Islami Jamiat-i-Tulaba, Maulana Fazlur Rahman’s JUI-F, Al-Rahmat Trust, Ummah Welfare Trust, Jama’at-ud-Da’awa, Jamia Faridia, Lal Masjid Islamabad, and Jehadi groups Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and Jaish-i-Mohammad. A few smaller Islamic organisations too had set up banners or were escorting vehicles loaded with relief goods sent by people from every nook and corner of Pakistan.

Naveed Masood Hashmi, an organiser of the Al-Rahmat Trust, told The News that the members of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and Jaish-i-Mohammad were the first to start rescue operations after the devastating earthquake on the morning of October 8 not only in Balakot but also in Muzaffarabad and elsewhere in Azad Kashmir. "Mujahideen belonging to these groups were present in the area and were, therefore, able to reach the quake-affected places ahead of others. They saved lives by rescuing people trapped in damaged homes and rushing the injured to hospitals," he claimed.

Hashmi refuted statements by Abdul Sattar Edhi and Altaf Hussain in which they alleged that Islamic organisations were not doing anything for the benefit of the earthquake victims. He said the situation on the ground whether it is Balakot, Muzaffarabad or Bagh was different and any independent observer would be able to see that the Islamic organisations were the most active and effective in helping the quake victims. "Seeing is believing and we invite reporters, politicians and lawyers to visit the quake-affected towns and find out as to who is serving the victims and who is making noises. Members of Islamic organisations have already gone beyond Balakot to visit stranded mountain communities in their villages and provide them succour.

Among this lot are activists of former prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N who have set up a relief camp in Mansehra.

I do not know why you have referred to ummat.com. I didn't refer to ummat.com nor I am a reader of ummat.com.

The facts were published in dailies "The News" and "Washington Post" both of whom are anti-Mujahideen and not anti-MQM. The News have a bad linking system so you cannot get it now by clicking the link on my blog.

By the way, is not Altaf Hussain anti-Mujahideen and anti-Ummah Islam ?
