Urdu Medium School

Some persons, who like to appreciate others (Qadeer Ahmed Rana, Shuaib, Manzoor Khan, sorry I forgot others), had praised my English.

Thus, I have been made to reveal the secret (Specially for Mr Qadeer Ahmed Rana). I had studied in Urdu medium schools where the subject of English was taught to me from 6th to 8th class by a teacher who was only a Matriculate and during 9th and 10th by a Graduate (not of English language). They were hard-working and honest teachers and the quality of their teaching was superb. If I had remembered all what they taught me, my English would have been far better than what it is now.

While in 8th class, I started writing letters to different embassies in English seeking information about tourism and education in their respective countries. Today, when I see students of 8th class being pampered by their highly advanced parents, I feel like burying myself alive under the earth.

I write below a few sentences that I remember out of the paragraphs that were given to us for translation at annual examinations of 10th (Matric) and 12th (Intermediate)

Matric Examination: Translate in to idiomatic English

F. Sc. or Intermediate Examination: Translate in to idiomatic English

Sir, our exams were easy beasy. This is such a tough one! I need the weekend to think it through and work on it.

Corruption in education has corrupted not only our teachers but also our students, our youth and our parents. "Why work hard when there are easy ways to get by" has become our national philosophy. But I see hope at the end of this tunnel. I believe that Pakistanis are survivors and they will come out of this ignorant phaze in a few more decades.

Yesterday, I was reading about Huriyat's Pakistan visit and I thought that may be you would shed some light on the differences between different huriyat leaders, Syed Gilani and government of Pakistan. What you think about latest developments towards peace process and solution of Kashmir issue?

Translation you can try and do show it to me. I had secured 70% marks in English in Matric.

Corruption has eaten us from within like termite, however, I have not lost hope for better days.

Kashmir issue is too big to discuss in comments. I have been avoiding to take it up but now that you have demanded, soon insha Allah it will be taken up on the main page in installment. This will fit in because lot of hypocrisy is also attached to the Kashmir issue.

Ajmal! ur memory is amzaing.... my own exprience is like ... i study in english medium school and my urdu is awful.. i think it should be perfect because i use to live in a society that is a urdu speaking and the country i born in has urdu as a national language... but guyz... u can find a lot of mistakes in my blog... and i am useing my blog as my urdu practiceing blog.

If you compare the urdu mediam and english mediam then education standard must be count. if we see in past we have a good leaders that come out from the lower class and medium class families they got good education.. and live a good life.

we need excellent teachers and Ideal mothers... mothers make the kids base. The new research shows that the first 5 years of a kid is really very important for his life what ever he learn in this period that effect in his future life....

well! if we go in detail then we can find we have some responsibilites and every one in the society is repsonsible for the current education condition. we are the one who make it worse.

You are right in saying that those who go for “O”, “A” levels their names do not appear in the results of Matric, but this tendency of opting “O”, “A” levels has recently increased.

Let us go further. How many of the “O”, “A” levels students are able to get admission in the high merit institutions like medical, engineering, etc ? Then who join after “O”, “A” levels, how they fair vis a vis high merit Intermediate pass students. Please collect data from universities. I had done it, that is why, I commented on it.

There is one category of “O”, “A” levels who come of rich families and they leave the country for higher studies after “O”, “A” levels. There is little chance of any genius among them.

    Shabbir:
I fully agree to your idea that mothers are the best teachers / trainers of the next generation. If mothers remain busy in their own social life leaving their children at the mercy of servants, what good result you can expect.

Teachers were not well-paid even in old days but they were respected by everybody, the result being that they worked with devotion. A time came when we had so-called Awami Hakoomat. Our rulers disgraced honest government servants and taught others to do the same. Private schools were taken over and their devoted teachers were thrown out of service. Politics was brought in to educational institutions. The result is very clear today.

Though education has been neglected by the government for the past over three decades but government schools and colleges in the cities are still doing well.

Again I can not but agree that we all have some responsibilities regarding education of our children which, I am sorry to say, we are not fulfilling.

I passed Matric while at Muslim High School and F. Sc while at Gordon College, Rawalpindi. I passed B. Sc. Mechanical Engineering at Engineering College Lahore. My elder son passed Matric and Intermediate at Sir Syed College, Wah Cantt. He Passed B. Sc. Electrical Engineering from Engineering University, Lahore securing 1st position in all the four annual examinations. At present, he is pursuing Ph. D. Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta (USA).

All this does not prove one way or the other. Only collective data sets the trend.

    Mr Ajmal,

Somehow I donot agree with you because I believe that a genius can be born to a rich or to a poor.
    And when you say that
"How many of the “O”, “A” levels students are able to get admission in the high merit institutions like medical, engineering, etc ?"

I dont agree here as well because the std of A levels and O levels is much higher then what is taught at metric or intermediate level. Students who are not able to clear the medical or engineering tests is not because they are not "genius" enough but because the course material is totally different.

the days when you were taught english was the time of british rule the language you use is mostly English and not American. What I see is that most Pakistani kids are more influenced with the American rather then the English and some of them are not even aware of the difference and thus we are building a confuse nation.

I dont know what research and what knowledge you have but it will be good if you try to go out and see the reality rather then doing research on internet because 80% of information on internet is False. Islambad/ Wah is not even 1/3 of Pakistan try to look at a bigger picture for the future.
